Changing Perspectives, Basking Shark. Original Aerial Seascape Painting
‘Changing Perspectives, Basking Shark’ captures a basking shark from an aerial perspective swimming in British waters off the coast of Cornwall with surfers watching on in awe. My work explores our relationship with sharks and challenges the negative attitude portrayed by the media. Basking Sharks are endangered & are protected in UK waters. They are still affected by boat strikes, pollution and ghost fishing gear. Shark populations worldwide are in decline at an alarming rate due to fishing, with 100 million sharks being killed every year. Having spent most of my life surfing, diving, and snorkelling around the UK's waters, I have been lucky enough to observe these beautiful animals in their natural habitat and have been able to uniquely study them through sketching, videoing, and photographing them both below and above the surface. They are the true gentle giants of the sea, but need our help before they are at further risk of extinction. I hope my work showcases the true majestic creatures they are and that they are not to be feared, as the tabloid press tries to make us believe every summer.
